BOTOX® vs Oral Drugs for focal dystonia
Focal dystonia is a disorder where excessive contraction of a select group of muscles causes pain, disfigurement, or impairment of movement. Drugs which relax muscles are usually associated with side effects such as sedation and dry mouth. In focal dystonias, only few muscles are overactive and to relax those muscles high doses of relaxant drugs are required. As a result, drug treatment has poor effect and undesirable side effects.
Botulinum toxin acts only on the muscle injected and does not have effect on other body parts.
Effect of Botulinum toxin is temporary and lasts for 3-4 months, after which a repeat injection will be required.
How much does it cost ?
A vial of Botulinum toxin injection (50 units) will cost approx. Rs 9000-10000. Procedure charges are approx. Rs 2000-3000 per session.
